What is Webmoney, and how can I use it?

Webmoney is an online method of payment very similar to PayPal. You can use it to accept and make payments at thousands of places online, transfer money to other people, or even use it as a payment method on your own online store. You can have multiple accounts in different currencies that correspond with the US Dollar, Euro, Russian Ruble, and other currencies.

Several of the sites reviewed at SongBoom accept Webmoney as a payment option. To get started, go to the Webmoney website and sign up.

Most people that are familiar with conducting Bank Transfers will find Webmoney very easy to use, since a Bank Transfer is the easiest way to put money into your Webmoney account. However, not all people are familiar with making Bank Transfers; therefore, here are some hints on how to fill up your Webmoney account:

1) Bank transfer. I know it might sound scary (or difficult) if you've never done it before, but it's really not. Here in Europe it's such a standard thing that it really only takes about 2 minutes online to complete one. In the US, if you have an online banking service it might be easier - you can probably do the transfer in your browser rather easily. The only downside is that most US banks tend to charge crazy fees ($10-$30 or similar) for doing a transfer unless the account is at the same bank. Maybe you will be lucky and a transfer will be easy.

2) Get a CashU card (or if you're in the UK or Europe, check UKash or paysafecard). You can fill this card with a credit card and then transfer it to your Webmoney account here. This has the advantage that you can use your credit card, but you've got to go through an extra step to do it. This should work fine for people from the USA.

3) Transfer from a different e-currency. There are several websites that will exchange money from PayPal directly into Webmoney (for example, here here and here) - but you have to pay quite a high commission to do so. The exchange rates quoted on some of those sites are a hefty 13.9-17% when making the exchange using PayPal. I cannot personally attest to the service of any of those sites.

Online payment is actually a good idea especially for people with disabilities and those who doesn't have the time in going to their trusted banks.

Webmoney is an excellent system

Webmoney is an excellent system and very safe for online payments. They do annually over a billion dollars in transfers and recently came out with a WMG (webmoney gold) purse. I like the Euro purse for online spending. Low fees and easy methods to fund your account. Its a great system. Mark Herpel www.DigitalMoneyWorld.com

WebMoney is an electronic

WebMoney is an electronic money and online payment system (transactions are conducted through WebMoney Transfer). WM Transfer Ltd, the owner and administrator of WebMoney Transfer Online Payment System, was founded in 1998 and is a legal corporate entity of Belize, Central America. Originally targeted mainly at Russian clients, it is now used worldwide. The company claims to have more than 6 million users. Every account, known as a "purse", is run in Gold-equivalents (WMG), US Dollar-equivalents (WMZ), ruble-equivalents (WMR), euro-equivalents (WME) or hryvnia-equivalents (WMU) . Accounts are identified by strings called WM-IDs; account holders can remain completely anonymous towards each other. Signing up and receiving webmoney (known as "WM units") from other users is free; sending WM units to other accounts incurs a fee of 0.8%. Funds can be deposited into or withdrawn from webmoney accounts by money order , wire transfer, by conversion from other electronic currencies, or by cash transactions at authorized exchange offices; all of these incur various fees. It is also possible to purchase WM cards for $10–$100 in order to fund an account. The main address for technical support is given in Moscow; the main proprietor and administrator is located in Belize. Transactions in WMR are underwritten by WMR LLC in Moscow and transactions in WME and WMZ are underwritten by Amstar Holdings Limited in Panama. Besides CIS and Eastern European countries, WebMoney has offices in such countries as USA, Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Japan, Greece, Israel, France, UAE. WebMoney transactions are safe because they do not require a credit card or bank account and are immune against certain scams because they are final and cannot be retracted; this is similar to e-gold and cash and unlike credit card transactions and PayPal . It is therefore not possible to buy WM units online with a mere credit card or a paypal account. WebMoney has had its share of security vulnerabilities. Fraudsters have targeted users of WebMoney with a host of Trojans and mal-wares.
